Generally, adverse reactions with lisinopril are mild and either require no treatment or are easily treated. Common side effects include chest pain, stomach pain, and fatigue. Rare side effects include heart palpitations, pancreatitis, and unexplained weight loss. Some side effects of lisinopril should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider, such as difficulty breathing or swallowing, unexplained skin rash, and unexplained swelling of the hands or feet. lisinopril side effects
High Blood Pressure
Lisinopril has been studied extensively in clinical trials for people with high blood pressure. In these studies, side effects are always documented. The most common side effects of lisinopril, occurring in more than 1 percent of people with high blood pressure, were:
’Fatigue
‘Body weakness (asthenia)
‘Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting when standing from a sitting or lying down position
‘Extreme low blood pressure
‘Diarrhea
‘Nausea
‘Vomiting
‘Headache
‘Dizziness
‘Cough (see Lisinopril Cough)
‘Upper respiratory infections, such as the flu or common cold
‘Unexplained rash
‘Impotence or erectile dysfunction (see Lisinopril Sexual Side Effects).
If side effects of lisinopril do occur, most people do not need to stop their medicine. In previous research studies, 5.7 percent of people with high blood pressure stopped taking lisinopril because of side effects.
Many medications can cause side-effects. A side effect is an unwanted response to a medication when it is taken in normal doses. Side effects can be mild or severe, temporary or permanent. The side effects listed below are not experienced by everyone who takes this medication. If you are concerned about side effects, discuss the risks and benefits of this medication with your doctor.
The following side effects have been reported by at least 1% of people taking this medication. Many of these side effects can be managed, and some may go away on their own over time.
Contact your doctor if you experience these side effects and they are severe or bothersome. Your pharmacist may be able to advise you on managing side effects.
’diarrhea
‘intolerance to cold
‘loss of appetite
‘nausea or vomiting
’stomach cramps or pain
Although most of the side effects listed below don’t happen very often, they could lead to serious problems if you do not check with your doctor or seek medical attention.
Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur:
’bleeding from cuts that need a long time to stop
‘bleeding gums
‘headaches, dizziness, or weakness
‘heavier than normal menstrual bleeding
‘nosebleeds
‘numbness or tingling of hands, feet, or face
‘pain, swelling, or discomfort
‘paralysis
‘pink or brown urine
’sudden shortness of breath
‘unexplained bruising
‘unusual pain or swelling
Stop taking the medication and seek immediate medical attention if any of the following occur:
’fainting
’signs of a serious allergic reaction (i.e., swelling of face or throat, hives, or difficulty breathing)
’signs of bleeding (dark, tarry stools, bleeding in eye, blood in stools, blood in vomit or vomit that looks like coffee grounds, blood in urine, coughing up blood)
’signs of liver damage (i.e., yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine, light-coloured stools)
Some people may experience side effects other than those listed. Check with your doctor if you notice any symptom that worries you while you are taking this medication.
